What is osteopathy?

... and how is it different from chiropractics and physiotherapy?

Osteopathy is a form of alternative manual medicine that emphasises the role of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in overall health and well-being. It is based on the belief that the body has a natural ability to heal itself and that by restoring the body's structural balance, it can function optimally. Osteopaths use a range of techniques such as joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue massage, and joint/tissue balancing techniques to treat various musculoskeletal, and systemic conditions; with all treatments tailored to each individual patient's needs. Additionally, patients can also be provided with self-management techniques, education surrounding overall health, and injury rehabilitation when needed.

While both osteopathy and physiotherapy focus on the musculoskeletal system, the main difference between them is the underlying philosophy and approach to treatment. Osteopathy emphasises the interrelationship between different parts of the body, while physiotherapy tends to focus more on specific areas of injury or dysfunction. Osteopathy in general uses a far more hands-on approach and may include craniosacral therapy and other gentle techniques, while physiotherapy tends to be more exercise and rehab-based.

Chiropractic treatment, on the other hand, focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, and seeks to restore proper alignment of the spine to promote overall health. Chiropractors primarily use manipulation techniques to achieve this goal. While osteopaths use spinal manipulative techniques, a wider range of techniques are also utilised and there is a consideration of the body as a whole.
